Biography
Dr. Md. Shawkut Ali Khan is a distinguished academic and professional in the field of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering. He joined the World University of Bangladesh (WUB) as a Professor in March 2024 and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Automobile Engineering.
Dr. Khan received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.Sc.) in Mechanical Engineering from Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET) and subsequently completed his Master of Science in Engineering (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering from Kanazawa University, Japan. His doctoral research focused on the simplification of structural design analysis using First Order Analysis (FOA), with particular emphasis on developing simpler and more efficient approaches for analyzing complicated continuum structures. His master's research focused on structural design strategies for reducing thermal deformation in CNC lathe machines, reflecting his longstanding interest in mechanical design, structural analysis, and engineering optimization.
Following the completion of his Ph.D., Dr. Khan began his professional career in Japan as a Mechanical Analyst at Fuji Techno Solution, Kanagawa, Japan. In this role, he worked on mechanical design, drafting, modeling, and engineering analysis, utilizing technical tools and software including AutoCAD, NX, and I-DEAS. This industrial experience provided him with practical expertise in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), mechanical modeling, and structural analysis.
He subsequently pursued an academic career and served in various teaching, academic, and administrative positions at several reputed universities in Bangladesh. His academic career includes serving as an Assistant Professor at World University of Bangladesh and Eastern University, Associate Professor at Eastern University, and Professor at International University of Business, Agriculture & Technology (IUBAT). He also served as Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Science & Engineering at City University, where he contributed significantly to academic administration, departmental development, curriculum management, and institutional growth.
Dr. Khan has more than 17 years of teaching experience and has made significant contributions to higher education through teaching, research, academic leadership, curriculum development, and administration. His teaching interests include Basic Mechanics, Dynamics, Solid Mechanics, Theory of Machines, Machine Design, and Power Plant Engineering. His interdisciplinary professional background enables him to connect fundamental engineering principles with practical industrial applications.
Dr. Khan has authored more than 33 research papers published in international journals and conference proceedings, reflecting his active engagement in research and his contributions to the fields of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering. His research interests include First Order Analysis (FOA), structural design and analysis, structural simplification, structural optimization, thermal deformation analysis, finite element analysis, mechanical design, machine design, and computer-aided engineering. His research particularly focuses on developing simplified and efficient approaches for analyzing complex structures, enabling engineers to identify necessary modifications in structural topology, beam cross-sections, and panel thicknesses while reducing analysis time, cost, and potential design risks.
In addition to his academic and research activities, Dr. Khan has valuable industrial experience in power generation and industrial mechanical systems. During his tenure at Beximco Limited (Beximco Group), he was involved in the maintenance and supervision of chillers, boilers, cooling towers, central air-conditioning systems, and gas turbine power-generation systems. He also worked on maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity conditions in different sections of textile manufacturing facilities, contributing to production quality and operational efficiency.
Dr. Khan has also undertaken professional training in specialized engineering and academic areas. Notably, he completed a seven-month training on the installation and commissioning of a gas turbine power plant arranged by TUMA TURBOMACH SA, as well as professional training on Teaching-Learning, Curriculum & Quality Assurance conducted by the Graduate Training Institute, Bangladesh Agricultural University, with support from HEQEP-UGC.
With his extensive academic and professional experience, research contributions, industrial exposure, and proven leadership in academic administration, Dr. Md. Shawkut Ali Khan brings valuable expertise to the World University of Bangladesh. In his current role as Professor and Head of the Department of Automobile Engineering, he aims to contribute to the continued academic excellence, research development, industry collaboration, student development, and institutional growth of the university through collaboration with faculty members, students, industry partners, and other stakeholders.
